I’ve been trying to use forums to help promote my site, it’s working decent I believe. I’ve heard though that search engines don’t put a whole lot of value on links that come from a forum? Would make sense anyway. At least it’s easy. Just put a link or picture in your signature.

Not surprisingly, most of the comments on this post concern getting backlinks and affiliate products promotion, pure WIIFM (what’s in it for me?).
If more attention were given to learning and helping others to learn, forums could be of much more use to the internet marketing community. In that case, backlinks and afffiliate products promotion (usually allowed in signatures) would follow naturally.

Jody,
Thank you for your comment. I understand your point. But, we all use forums to gain something from it, whether its learning seo, how to cook something or promoting a website or affiliate program or what have you. But, as long as everyone contributes to the forum, I dont see anything wrong with promoting your stuff. Notice I am saying contributing, not spamming!

hi, it’s true in my opinion, an online forum for those who are still a newbie would be very helpful to search for blog traffic. although part of all courses, if there is no traffic blog visitors will not be useful

I heard that it’s actually not really allowed to promote your site/business on forums? Is that not the case? If promotion is allowed, I will get out there now!

Frank,
By promotion I mean having a link back to your site or business, Which ultimately helps drive more traffic to your site/business and that means more sales.

@start up company
You can get plenty of good back links from forums, it just depends who replies and how much authority that forum has.

Nice article. I agree the importance of back links However does commenting on forum and leaving your link tells search engine for a back link ? What if owner of the forum has specified no-follow ?

Yasir,
Most forums are dofollow. Also to prevent spammers, some forum will only turn your link to dofollow after you have been a member for awhile and have posted “x” number of genuine posts. Also, dont forget that even if a forum isn’t dofollow, if it gets a lot of traffic, your link there can direct some of that traffic toy our site as well. So, its a win win situation.

Thank you for a very interesting article. I am very new to this online stuff. 2 months ago I could Google and get email. I have found myself in a situation where I need to try and make some extra money from home.I’m not sure if I will have any success, but I have learned a huge amount. I have had a very steep learning curve and articles and blogs such as yours are very helpful. For the longest time I didn’t have a clue what a backlink was. At least I could Google it. Thanks

I have heard that due to the amount of links on forums, the backlinks can have very little value. Not sure if anyone can comment? The value in information and questions being able to be asked / answered is great though. Thanks for making us think of the little things.

Startup C…,
Its a myth. If that was the case, then backlinks from sites like ezine would be worthless, but, hundreds of people submit their articles on ezine daily to get quality backlinks.

I’ve got to agree with building back links, if you are on the right forum and you build links through it right it can be a good return.
Unfortunately there is very few forums that allow you to promote affiliates, especially forums that have extremely high traffic.
