Get Paid to Translate Online as a Freelance Language Translator
Like to get paid to translate online? On line translation is in high demand and online language translators usually make good money. If you have always wanted to work from home, online translating jobs can help you achieve that. If you are a native speaker of a foreign language or know a few more languages beside your mother tongue, you can start making money working from home as a freelance translator.
In the age of internet and instant global communication, knowing more than one language can benefit you tremendously. These days lots of companies work on a global stage and have to deal with foreign clients and customers from all over the world, so they need translators to fill in the gap. Some companies have partners in different countries and in order to keep their partners around the world updated about the latest news, policies and major updates, they would also need someone to translate those documents.
For these companies, it wouldn’t make sense to go look for individual translators every time they need one. That’s why there are companies who act as translation agencies. Translation agencies help companies find translators and help freelance translators find translation jobs.
How to get a job as a translator?
To get paid to translate, you will need to go through translation agencies. There are a few very well-known and trusted translation agencies out there that you could use to find translation work.
To be hired by these companies, you must pass translation tests. These tests are aimed at finding out how fluent a person is in the given language. Usually translation tests are written tests and you must pass them with precision and accuracy.
In most cases, a translation agency hires only native speakers for the target language. Non the less, if you can pass their test, chances are you will be hired no whether or not you are native speaker or not.

How much do translators get paid?
Translation jobs differ from one another. Some require hundreds of pages to be translated from say English to Russian and some require only a few sentences to be translated. The amount of money you can make with each translator job depends on the kind of translation (technical, legal, audio, real-time interpretation, text, medical, literary, etc), and of course, who you’re translating for (government agency, privet company, student, etc).
Some translating jobs pay per word translated whcih can be any where from $0.10 to $0.20 or more per word. While other translation jobs pay by the hour which can be anywhere from $10 to up to $100 per hour. And if you are a certified translator, you can make even more money as a freelance translator.
How to become a certified translator?
You can become a certified translator by becoming a member of ATA (American Translators Association) and taking their certification exam. Passing the test entitles you to use the designation CT (certified translator) after your name like Satrap, CT. That title tells the potential clients you are a professional, thus you get paid as a professional.
So, if you are multilingual and can read and write like a native speaker, get in touch with some of these translation agencies and start your part time or full-time work at home job and get paid to translate online.

Hi,
I was just wondering how to get paid safely after finishing the translation without being tricked and what can be the terms and conditions to be in the safe side since it is an online service and it is hard to guarantee that payment issue. Thank you.

Hi Amy,
Most of this agencies that I have listed here have strict rules and policies in place to ensure everyone’s safety when it comes to financial matters. So, I would adhere to their guidelines and also I would keep a record of all your emails and messages between you and the employee so in case something goes wrong, you can have prove of the whole thing. Best of luck to you.

Hi Gera,
Good to see you here. Yeah, I would imagine it wouldn’t be that hard to find Spanish to English (or vise versa) projects to make money with. Even if you dont go through the above mentioned companies, lots of freelancing sites like Fiverr and Elance are full of translation projects.
Thanks for stopping by Gera.

I do this, and I love it! It’s especially a good way to earn some extra cash for those who know unusual languages, because the more unusual the language, the higher the rate. In my experience anyway…

Hi,
I only know Spanish and not well enough to translate. However, this is a very interesting niche and a website could be developed that would be potentially profitable. This could be a good job for immigrants.
Thanks,
Jim

Excellent idea Jim. I myslef am an immigrant, so I do speak a few different languages. And yes, that would be a great opportunity for immigrants to make use of their bilingual ability.
Thanks for your suggestion Jim.

I don’t translate but I see how this could be lucrative to some. I do re-writing for non-native English speakers. It’s fun to meet new people from far away places by offering my services as a re-writer / proofreader. Just don’t get enough website visitors. Usually only a few hits from craigslist posts.
