How to Build a Link Wheel
Link wheel is an advanced search engine optimization method for achieving higher ranking, and the good thing is that it can be build by almost anyone, even if you don’t know what exactly search engine optimization is. Link wheel is basically an advanced and speedy way of getting quality backlinks to your site form authority sites. If you don’t know how exactly it works, you can read about it here, what is link wheel.
To build a link wheel you need to pick a few blogging platforms or web 2.0 properties. They are free and easy to build and most of them are high ranking sites. Most people start with set of 6 site. You can use as many as you like. Here is how to build a link wheel.
Lets say your main blog/site (the one that we are building the link wheel for to get it rank better) is about making money online. And lets assume we chose these 6 web 2.0 properties to build our link wheel:
wordpress.com
Hubpages
Blogger
Ezine
Squidoo
Vox
1- On wordpress.com write and publish a unique article with 1 link in it pointing back to your main site and another link pointing to hubpages.
2- On Hubpages write and publish a unique article with 1 link in it pointing back to your main site and another link pointing to Blogger.
3- On Blogger write and publish a unique article with 1 link in it pointing back to your main site and another link pointing to Ezine.
4- On Ezine write and publish a unique article with 1 link in it pointing back to your main site and another link pointing to Squidoo.
5- On Squidoo write and publish a unique article with 1 link in it pointing back to your main site and another link pointing to Vox.
6- On Vox write and publish a unique article with 1 link in it pointing back to your main site. At this point point you can either choose to leave the wheel as it is, and leave it “open” or you can close the wheel by linking your website back to your wordpress.com blog. Either way, you will see an improvement in your blog’s search engine ranking.
Remember not to make too many link wheels too fast. It should look natural. Most blogs and websites don’t get hundreds of back links over night from high ranking sites, so you don’t want to make Google and other suspicious of all the quality backlinks your getting. If you can use it wisely, link wheel can be a great tool for achieving a higher search engine ranking.

So a quick question…do we concentrate on building backlinks to the wheel sites and let them push to the main site? OR do we build another linkwheel (a 3rd tier) above the first one and link to it.
I guess I want to know if my efforts would be better used building web 2.0 sites than blog commenting.
Thanks!

The best way is to interlink your web 2.0 properties. Say, you make 8 web 2.0 sites, link the first one to the second one, second one to the forth one, forth one to the second one and so on. Of course, make sure to link to your main site from each web 2.0 site as well.

I did a thing recommended by Ed Dale in his challenge – setup Web 2.0 sites and post to them through Posterous. The problem with that approach is that all of the sites are getting the same content.
It wasn’t bad by the way but I think that using Web 2.0 sites in Link Wheel will be more powerful.
And… I think that it is important to submit all of these sites to different directories and search engines as well.
For example you can use IMAutomator to do some of this job automatically.

I feel like this is an obvious question but I will ask it anyway. I think I get most of it but my question is about the actual links. I have been putting my website link in the resource box. Should I continue to do this? And is that where you put the link to the other web 2.0 site also or does that link go somewhere else.
Thanks
Dean

Dean, it really doesn’t matter where you put your links. As long as they are there and you are using your keywords as anchor text, you are good.

Hey! Great post and its really help me get the clear idea about link wheel. But, one thing is still ringing in my head? The article that we post in all those free platforms will all they have to be different or you can simply post one article in various websites and link back to your own? Please let me know in this!

Kiran, you don’t really have to change the articles, although some say its best to change it a little bit since they say links from within unique content have more value.

Great link wheel article. Thanks for posting this. I am just getting into building the link wheels. I went to Vox and it looks like they are no longer in operation. Here are more great web 2.0 sites for you to expand your wheel. These are all PR5 sites.

Hi Satrap
Great article, i’ve just come across it in my link wheel investigation. Just one question, am i right in thinking that you link each web 2.0 site to the actual article you have written? or to your particular blog homepage?
Many Thanks

Hey,
I have also been building links for awhile and it has not really gotten me anywhere what forums of backlink building would you recommend? I have actually heard that some people really like Blog posting but it is honestly frowned upon by some people.
Thanks

Your welcome Enarcade. Believe me its not that hard to get a higher ranking, just keep building backlinks and create quality content or what have you and you will get there. Al;though PR doesn’t really mean much specially when it comes to traffic. There are thousands of sites with PR0 that get thousands of daily visitors and sites with pr 7 and higher that dont get much traffic. Who do you think is making more money with their site?…

Hi there, thanks for writing this article. I’ve been trying to picture how a link wheel looks like. Wasn’t clear until I come across this article on your blog. From what you’re saying its like your website is in the middle and the Web 2.0 sites you are referring to are like connections going to the main site just like the spokes of a wheel that meets in the centre. And each of the web 2.0 sites are connecting to another web 2.0 site. Good Luck

link wheel I’m going to have to think about this one for awhile, I have heard of three way link sharing but this is a new one for me. Not sure where the link juice comes from in the wheel.

satrap Reply:

The juice comes from the web 2.0 sites you use for your link wheel. For example if you use blogger for your link wheel and linkback to your site, your page will be something like yourpage.blogspot.com which means you got a backlink from blogspot itself which is an authority site with a PR 7. Hope this helps you to understand the link wheel power.

Honestly this is the first time i’m hearing about link wheel, before i try it out i would like some clarification. My site link here is a new blog i just set up some weeks ago and i’m doing well adding articles and recently started commenting on blogs. I really want this blog to start getting a reasonable amount of traffic. So my question is, since this blog is still very new with no PR, if i use this link wheel method, will i see good result? If i wouldn’t see real result since it’s new, i could leave it for later and concentrate on more important things.

Hi Karo, Link-wheel is a powerful method for backlink bulding and getting a better search engine ranking, but since your site is new, I would suggest not to build so many linkwheels at once. You want to make it appear as natural as possible. A new blog doesn’t get hundreds of backlinks from authority sites over night, so make sure you build up slowly, so you dont get in trouble with Google and other search engines. By the way, keep doing what your doing, article submission, commenting and etc. You are on the right track. You will get there, it just takes time and hard work. But, dont give up, you will achieve your goals if you keep doing what you doing and more.
Please feel free to email me if you have any question that I can help you with. By the way I visited your blog and it looks great. I am sure you will make it. Good luck with your blog.
