How to Make Money Recycling Used Tires
How to make money recycling used tires? I admit, it sounds like one of those unusual ways to make money, but the fact is that people are and you too can make money recycling tires. You can start a used tire recycling business for under $100! If you are in need of cash fast or just looking for a way to make some extra money, old used tires can get you there!
Here is a step by step tire recycling business plan that you can use to start your own tire recycling business with less than $100 in investment:
If you own a car, chances are that at one pint or another, you have had to get new tires for your car. And if you’ve paid attention to the procedure, you would’ve noticed that your mechanic/auto shop charges a small fee of about $5 per tire for disposing your old tires. It costs about the same for the shop to dispose old tires by sending them to the nearest tire recycling facility and that is why your mechanic/auto shop have to charge you for that so they don’t have to pay it out of their own pocket.

Auto shops have to take the tires to the recycling facility themselves. And obviously from a business stand point, that’s not a good option because the shop has to waste time and money (on gas) to deliver tires to the facility. So, the auto shops are left with only one other choice and that is to call and schedule a pick by the recycling company. However, used tier recycling companies usually have a minimum requirement for picking up tires (usually around 100 tiers).
That means the shop has to store their tires until they reach the minimum required in order to schedule a pick up. The problem with that is that when it comes to tire storage, most states have strict rules. An example of such rules would be that you are not allowed to store tires (whether old or new) in an open air space, because if it rains the mixture can produce the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.
How to make money recycling tires?
Most auto shops don’t have an empty large space where they can save tires. And of course paying hefty fines for tire storage is the last thing a shop owner who is trying to make a living wants to do. That means, they have to gt rid of tires as fast as they can. That leaves auto shops with another choice and that is to hire a reliable company/person who can pick up the tires from the store and deliver them to the recycling facilities. That reliable person can be you!
How much money can you make?
Because of all the problems I explained above, most mechanics and small auto shops are willing to pay you $3 for each tire you take away. That means, for every 100 tire you haul, you can make up to $300! That’s not bad for a few hours of work. Though, some tire recycling facilities may charge a flat fee of $1 per tire they take from you. But even with that fee, you can still make $2 per tire.
Obviously since the auto shop is not going to have 100 tires every day for you to deliver, it would be smart to do this service for as many local mechanics and auto shops as you can. That way you can make more money since you increase the number of tires you deliver.
What if you don’t have a truck?
Lets face it, not everyone has a pick up truck or a big SUV that can haul 100 tires. If you are on of those who don’t have a truck, there is a simple alternative to that. Tire recycling facilities pick up tires for free if you have the minimum required tires. Well, if you don’t have a truck, you can use your garage!
You can simply pick up the tires with your small car and save them in your garage or build a simple structure with roof in your backyard and use it as a storage facility for your tires. When you have 100 tires, call the facility and schedule a pick up. It’s as simple as that.
You need to register your business (in most states)
Because anyone could go pick up the tires from the mechanic and dump them on the side of the road, most state require you to have a registered business. That way you can be held accountable if something like that happens. You can get your business registered for less than $50 in most states, by going to your local city hall.
How to find the nearest tire recycling facility?
Obviously the closer the recycling facility is, the less time and money (on gas) you have to spend and with any successful business cutting unnecessary costs is a must. You can locate each and every recycling facility in your area by going to 1800Recycling.com.
You can also learn more about tire recycling and states rules and regulations and also about how to start a tire recycling business by visiting EPA.gov
I admit it’s a little labor intensive and may not be for everyone. But if you are willing to work hard and give it a try, it will work as it has been working for many people. It really is a great way to make extra money whenever you need it.
What do you think of this side business idea? Do you know of anyone who makes money recycling old tires?… Please feel free to share your thoughts about how to make money recycling tires.

It seems like you haven’t red the article all the way through. I address the truck issue n the article.
As far as time is concerned, is that something new? Can you find any job or money making method that you can do without spending time?….
Thanks for your comment and question Alex.

This is a pretty cool idea. I bet if you start earning enough money, you could even outsource some of the manual labor and expand the business. It just goes to show that you can turn almost any idea into a thriving business.

Tires Recycling, really? I’ve never thought of that myself.
You mentioned that “Tire recycling facilities pick up tires for free if you have the minimum required tires”, so in that case the Auto Shop itself won’t hire someone for that matter, or will they?
Very thoughtful, thanks:)

Dev

Hi Dev,
I think you missed an important point in regards to why auto shops hire people to take the tire away instead of doing it themselves. Read the first sentence of the “How to make money recycling tires” paragraph!…
Thanks for commenting Dev.

Hi Satrap,
Your post is really interesting, and I have to follow up on that.
I told some friends about the Recycling Business, and I also did some research for any facilities in my area (from the above link)…unfortunately, the nearest place is 23 miles away from me.
Great information, but I am not very lucky though…lol:(

Dev
