How to Use Expired Domains to Get Free Traffic?
When it comes to traffic generation, expired domains are often over looked. A lot of people don’t even think about it. But, the reality is, expired domains are a fantastic tool for traffic generation. Many of these expired domains had a steady flow of traffic while they were still active. You can use that traffic for your blog. Here is how you can drive free traffic to your blog using expired domain:
Find expired domains
Simple perform an online search to get a list of expired domains. There are many free website and tools that you can use to narrow your search down. Obviously, you don’t want traffic that is not interested in what your blog is all about. So, you want to go for domains that had a related topic to the topic of your blog when they were alive.
Find out how popular the expired domain was (is)
Use the same method to discover the popularity of the domains that interest you. See how much traffic it was getting in its day. How popular the website was back then. the higher the popularity, the more traffic you can expect from it.
Build your site
After you have selected a site that suits your requirements, you can go about the normal business of adding content, getting additional traffic and everything else that goes with building a site or blog. Sit back and watch the traffic flow in thanks to the popularity of the expired domain you just bought.
Using expired domains to redirect traffic
Another way you can use expired domains for traffic generation is to use the expired domain to create traffic for another site. Buy the expired domain, and use a simple php code to redirect to the site you want the traffic to go to. So, any time people type in that expeired domain name, they will automatically be redirected to your site. You get a lot of free targeted traffic with a simple redirect.
Here is the php code you can use to redirect people from one domain to another:
<?php
header( ‘Location:YourSite.com‘ ) ;
?>
Copy and past this code into notepad, replacing the “YourSite.com” with your domain (the one you want visitors to go to). Save the file as php.index. Upload this file to the web root (public_html/www) of the expired domain. Now every time someone goes to visit that expired domain, they will automatically be redirected to your site.
Another great thing about an expired domain is the fact that the expired domain probably had other back links which visitors are still being directed. These people will also end up on your site, adding to its popularity.
Therefore, all you have to do is identify the expired domain names that fits your needs, and you’ve got free traffic!! That’s it! That is how you can use expired domains to get free traffic to your blog.

There are some excellent tools in the marketplace that will help you find expired domains with backlinks. Kenny Goodman’s DomainFace and Simon Johnson’s Domainer Income are excellent.
My strategy is to purchase expired domains and then put content on the domains. Simply start adding content and you will be amazed at the amount of traffic you will get. If the domain had Google PR in the past, in many cases that PR will come back simply by adding content to the site.
I am not a big fan of redirecting the domain to another site. The domain is an asset. If you add content to it your asset the domain will increase in value. If you simply do a redirect, that asset will eventually decrease in value in the eyes of both Google and the marketplace.

Great advice Jon. I agree, expired domains can rank quickly and bring in good traffic, if you spend some time and effort adding quality content to them.
Thanks for stopping by and sharing your experience Jon.

How can an expired domain dive traffic if it has no page rank? If nobody is going to the old domain how can this work? Also, won’t Google notice that the contents of the dropped domain is now the content of the domain it is pointing to?

Hi,
This is the first time that I read expired domain can get you visitors. The title itself was what attracted me to click on the link?
But,still I find it hard to believe this kind of thing works. Why waste time on this kind of thing when there are proven ways to get visitors to your niche blog?
This is my opinion.

Douglas,
If you are in the same niche as the expired domain once was, that means people who go to visit that expired domain are looking for the exact same kind of information you are offering. As I said, its all about finding the right expired domain name for your situation. Of course traffic from any expired domain isn’t going to be targeted. You have to choose the right domain first.

Expired traffic domains are very profitable to invest on, if you can use them the right way. Just finding good expired domain names is a big challenge itself. But, as you mentioned, if you can manage it, the rewards are great as well.

Trouble is you’d have to find a pretty popular expired domain to generate much worthwhile traffic, otherwise it’s not going to be much of an investment buying an expired domain.
